Diaper rash in newborns is rather common. No matter how often you clean your baby, sometimes, diaper rashes are inevitable. They, most often, occur due to the warmth and moisture of the body when pressed against the diaper, but can also be for reasons otherwise.
However, there are tips and tricks to keep your newborn’s bottoms clean and safe. In this article, we look at causes, treatment, tips, and remedies, so your little one can be as comfortable and happy as possible.
Identifying a Diaper Rash
A diaper rash typically looks like red spots on your child’s bottom and genital areas. It is an inflammation that appears on the surface of the skin due to overexposure to wetness and moisture.
Causes of Diaper Rash
- Skin Irritation: Irritation can be caused by multiple reasons. The most common reason for diaper rash is irritation from the baby’s stool and urine. This normally occurs if you leave the diaper on for long hours. The wetness of the diaper can chaff the skin causing rashes or red spots. Irritation can also be from the material of the diaper. If you are trying a brand for the first time, avoid buying in bulk. Always sample your diaper before so you can rule out diaper material as the cause of rashes. Additionally, skin irritation can also come from the products you are using on those parts like wet wipes, creams, lotions, or even strong fabric detergents.
- Skin Sensitivity: Some babies have skin that is highly sensitive in comparison to other children. In this case, any diaper will not work. Look for diapers for sensitive skin that are soft, avoids rubbing against the skin, and also are comfortable.
- Infection: The moisture from the diaper can also cause yeast or bacterial infection on the sensitive parts of your baby’s skin. Furthermore, if your little one is on antibiotics, it could also be a result of yeast infection cousin a diaper rash.
Treatment and Prevention of Diaper Rash
Treatment and prevention to cure a diaper rash cannot happen overnight, however, these steps can ensure your baby does not get annoyed or feel uncomfortable.
- Change the diaper frequently. One major cause of diaper rash is wetness and moisture, and by frequently changing the diaper, you ensure that the area is clean and dry. Doctors also recommend washing your baby’s bottoms with warm water every time you change the diaper to ensure proper hygiene.
- Give your little one a break from the diaper for a few minutes or hours every day. This way, you’re allowing some time for those areas to breathe and get their share of fresh air too. Especially, if you live in hot or humid areas, moisture and sweat can get trapped easily.
- Ensure the diaper fits properly. Most often, loose or tight diapers can as easily give a diaper rash due to chaffing and rubbing against the skin.
- Don’t be averse to the idea of using ointments or creams. Ointments with zinc can soothe the skin for irritation. Zinc allows the skin to heal, thereby preventing any more friction from the diaper on the skin. Drawing an ointment bath once in a while works wonders too!
- Finally, your hygiene matters too! Wash your hands well before and after changing the diaper so no dirt or harmful particles touches the skin of your child.
